Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
