The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
