The United Kingdom and the United States have reached a landmark bilateral deal that will maintain zero tariffs on UK drug exports going into the American market.

The Terms of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase spending on drugs through the NHS. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these vital exports will be held at nothing for a period of three years.

This deal follows recent statements to hike import taxes on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed reaching one hundred percent.

"This agreement between the Britain bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release noted.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the UK's largest exports to the US, which is easily the largest destination for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics reveal that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped drugs worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure made up 17.4% of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement safeguards jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," a minister commented.

Key UK Commitments

The deal involves several specific pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new medicines to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Previously, repayments exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact comes amid a protracted tension between the sector and the ministers over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that American patients were charged several times more for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while substantial expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS had to spend more on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
